Most Fairhope kitchen projects come down to one countertop question, quarried granite or engineered quartz. We field it almost daily in our Coastal Stone & Cabinetry showroom on South Greeno Road. Most homeowners who ask us already like the look of both, and want to know which one is easier to live with. Upkeep, heat, humidity and cost are where the two differ, and what we know about them comes from the kitchen countertops we fabricate and install every week.

Quartz and granite at a glance

Granite: the slab you pick is the one you get

Granite comes out of a quarry, so the veining in one slab will not show up again in the next. Our racks run from Blue Dunes to Colonial White to Steel Grey, and the slab you choose ends up in your kitchen and no one else’s.

Granite also takes heat well. MSI, one of the brands we carry, tells homeowners they can set hot pans and dishes directly on granite without damage. A pan off the range will not leave a mark in the finish, so a trivet stays optional.

The tradeoff is porosity. Granite has open pores, so wine, oil and citrus can work into the stone unless a sealer is holding them out. The right interval depends on the sealer your fabricator applied and how hard the kitchen works, and our post on why sealing matters goes further. Quartz: one pattern, no sealing

Quartz starts as ground natural stone bound with resin, and that resin closes the surface so nothing soaks in. You never have to seal it. Wine and cooking oil come off with warm water and a mild soap, which is the entire maintenance routine.

The pattern runs consistent from one end of the slab to the other, so what you saw in the sample is what arrives on your island. That suits a kitchen built around clean lines and makes a matching vanity top easy to order later. We carry quartz from Cambria and MSI, with tones in our stone gallery running from Frost White through Calacatta Prado.

Cambria, one of the quartz brands on our floor, describes its surface as “nonporous and nonabsorbent,” a combination “eliminating the need to seal.” The same care sheet asks owners to put “a closed-weave hot pad or solid trivet” under anything hot. Do quartz countertops need sealing?

No. The resin binder leaves no open pores, so there is nothing for a sealer to close. Granite is the one that needs its sealer refreshed over time.

That difference is what pushes most of the busy households we talk to toward quartz. Sealing granite is periodic work rather than a running chore.

Is granite or quartz better for coastal humidity?

Both hold up in Gulf Coast humidity, and quartz has a narrow edge because a closed surface leaves moisture nothing to soak into. Granite matches it as long as the seal is current, which means your sealing habit decides the outcome more than the weather off Mobile Bay does.

The work behind the stone causes more trouble in coastal kitchens than the stone itself does. A seam cut in the wrong place or an overhang left unsupported will bother you every day. What moves the price, and what upkeep adds

Neither material is the cheaper one across the board. Price tracks the slab itself, the brand behind it, the thickness and the edge profile you choose. You will learn more about cost from the stone in front of you than from the material name.

Upkeep is the cleaner comparison, since granite needs sealing on top of routine cleaning and quartz needs the cleaning alone. The Natural Stone Institute also steers granite owners away from dish detergent, whose fatty acid leaves a film that dulls stone. A neutral stone cleaner is the recommendation instead, while mild soap and water are enough for quartz. Keep acidic and abrasive products off both.

There is a straightforward way to tell whether your granite still has a working seal. The Natural Stone Institute suggests putting a little hot water on the surface, letting it sit for 10 to 20 minutes and then wiping it off. Bring a cabinet door to the showroom

Photos flatten stone. Veining that looks busy on a phone can read calm across six feet of counter, and a sample chip that seemed quiet can take over a room at full scale. We keep full slabs standing upright for that reason, rather than a wall of chips.

Bring a cabinet door, a flooring sample and your kitchen measurements. Our design associates will hold slabs against the door and the flooring and talk through edge profiles, thickness and where the seams will fall. That last detail decides how a kitchen reads in year five.
